Civic D16Y7 engine oil and filter change

Materials:

17mm socket wrench
17mm box end torque wrench
Oil filter (Honda/Filtech pt# 15400-PLM-A01 preferred)
Drain plug washer (pt# 14mm 94109-14000 preferred)
Oil (SAE 5W-30 Conventional Motor Oil)
Oil pan
Oil Rags
Clean cloth or paper towel

Procedure:

1. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature, then shut it off. Warm oil drains better than cool oil.

2. Place oil pan underneath drain plug.

3. Open hood and remove engine oil fill cap. Unscrew the drain plug to allow the old oil to fall into the oil pan. Wait until there are 1-2 drops per minute.

4. While the old oil is being drained, carefully unscrew old oil filter and hold upright when free to minimize spillage. Make sure rubber gasket comes off with the old oil filter and does not stick to the engine. Use rag to catch any fallen oil. Lubricate the rubber gasket on the new oil filter with new oil using your finger. Pour as much new oil into the new oil filter as possible. Clean the seating area on the engine with a shop rag and then lubricate it and the mount threads with your finger. Install the new oil filter.

5. Install drain plug preferably with new washer to prevent leaking. Make sure the old washer did not stick to the seating area or drain bolt. Do not over-tighten the drain plug, because pan is made of aluminum. Tighten it to: 33 lbf·ft (44 N·m , 4.5 kgf·m).

6. Slowly add 3.8 US quarts (3.6 L , 3.2 lmp qt) of new oil holding the bottle with the spout on top to minimize air bubbles. Install oil cap. Allow time for the oil to settle in the oil pan.

7. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a clean cloth or paper towel. Insert the clean dipstick all the way into its tube. Remove it and make sure the oil exists as close up to the second hole as possible. It should be between the upper and lower mark. If it does not reach the second hole, add more oil.

8. Start engine in neutral (N) with emergency brake pulled. The oil pressure indicator light should turn off within five seconds. If it does not, turn off the engine immediately and find out what is wrong. Check underneath car for leaking.

Notes: Oil filter can be changed every other oil change. Check engine oil levels when car is on level ground. Check dipstick to make sure level is between lines. Foamy oil can indicate that oil has been overfilled.

  1. The true milestone came in 1972 when AMSOIL became the first synthetic motor oil in the world to meet American Petroleum Institute service requirements. It set all-new standards for motor oil quality and outperformed conventional petroleum motor oils on all counts. It was clear from the start this innovative product would play a major role in redefining the performance capabilities of modern machinery and engines.
